Housing and living costs
TJKC assists foreign exchange program students to find reasonably priced housing close to campus at a subsidized rate. These are generally modern one-bedroom student apartments that are basically furnished and also include air conditioning, kitchen facilities, private bath and toilet, and veranda. For details and updates, please contact the Office of International Exchange (global@m.tjk.ac.jp).
Japan has a well-deserved but somewhat dated reputation for being expensive. In recent years, living costs have actually declined, especially for many consumer goods such as clothing. With judicious shopping, made even more possible by the large number of discount and outlet shops at the nearby Grandberry Mall and Carrefour supermarket, one can now live reasonably well in Japan on a student budget.
To give examples of some prices, you may eat inexpensively in our dining room, where the full lunch at ¥450 is the most expensive item on the menu; a large bowl of ramen noodles is available for ¥320. Japanese tea is free. If you prefer, you can get a Big Mac in the mall for ¥250 and wash it down with a large latte from Starbucks for ¥320. A pair of blue jeans can cost as low as ¥1990 (boot-cut) at Uniqlo. One dollar is currently about ¥110.
Student services
In order to provide both academic and other support for students during their studies at Tokyo Jogakkan College, the following services are offered:
Orientation Program:
Students arriving from abroad are met at Narita International Airport by a TJKC representative and then assisted to their accommodations. During orientation, students are familiarized with academic policies, procedures and support services available to them at TJKC, and they take part in academic and cultural workshops. International students also receive additional orientation to help them open bank accounts, obtain foreign registration cards, purchase cell phones (highly recommended), and take a Japanese language placement test.
Academic Advising:
All students at TJKC, including Exchange Program students, are assigned individual Faculty Advisors who assist them in planning their academic programs and who are responsible for providing other advice and individual counseling on academic, social, and personal matters.
Health services
The Office of Health Services (OHS) provides a comprehensive range of services. These include: first aid treatment for illness and injuries which occur on College premises; health counseling; and introductions to medical specialists if needed. OHS staff are available at all times during office hours should you require their attention. Contact: 042-796-9910 (ext. 229)
There are numerous medical facilities near our campus. These include a large new hospital (a 5 minute walk away), a dentist, an eye clinic, and three general practice local clinics. The OHS can put you in touch with these and help you to arrange your appointments and manage your medical affairs.
Because of the requirements of the School General Insurance Law, you must undergo an annual health examination at TJKC every April. Medical certificates can be issued to you upon your request. The date and details of the checkup are announced in your orientation meeting, and full details are also posted on the OHS section of the student board. The OHS conducts medical evaluations and diagnoses. X-rays and an electrocardiogram are conducted by other institutions designated by the College.
Health Insurance
Foreign Exchange Students should arrange for insurance in their home countries. Through the International Office, Exchange Program students may also purchase additional Accidental Injury Insurance, which covers injuries incurred on campus or during school-sponsored events (contact 042-796-9028, ext. 237; global@m.tjk.ac.jp). Degree seeking students from abroad must obtain a health card from the work place of their guarantors or the City Hall where they live. This insurance costs 20,000 yen (about $160) a year and covers 70% of most costs, including doctor's examinations, medicines, and non-elective surgery. |
